Cheeseburger Cake

Making a hamburger birthday cake takes awhile to bake and assemble, but the finished product is worth every second of making and decorating the cake.

You will need something to place your cake on when that you are decorating it. Like a large piece of cardboard covered with aluminum foil, or a large cake plate or a cake holder.

Three boxes of cake mix will be needed to make the hamburger cake. Two any flavor except chocolate that you like, and one box of chocolate cake mix. Grease and flour two round 9" cake pans and set aside. Also, cool one of the cakes top side up, take it out of the baking pan and turn it out on the cooling rack, and then flip it over again so that it is round side up. You will also need a muffin pan lined with cupcake holders. Mix up both boxes of cake mix that you chose for your cake and pour almost all of the cake batter into the prepared pans, and fill five or six cupcakes with the rest of the cake batter.

Bake the two cakes at 350 degrees for about 30 to 35 minutes, until just done. Remove cakes from the oven and let cool in the baking pans for about 8 to 10 minutes. Cool completely on cookie cooling trays. Grease and flour another 9" round cake pan and set aside. Mix the chocolate cake batter according to the package directions, and bake at 350 degrees for about 30 to 35 minutes, until just done. Fill up more cupcakes with the chocolate cake batter. Repeat above cooling process. Your cupcakes should be able to fit in the oven with the chocolate cake. Cool the cupcakes and decorate them as desired.

You can go all out decorating your hamburger cake. Make it however that you enjoy eating your hamburger. Be creative with your hamburger cake. Two cans of already made vanilla or cream cheese frosting, and one can of already made chocolate frosting, as well as prepare a homemade batch of buttercream icing, rice krispies, cake decorating bags, and the necessary cake decorating tips such as the 104 leaf tip for decorating the hamburger with, as well as cake decorating tip 5 for the decorating of the ketchup, cheese, red onion, mayo, mustard, however that you want your hamburger cake to look like, will be the necessary items that you will need while preparing your hamburger birthday cake. Food paste coloring will also be needed for tinting your icing to your desired colors.

To tint the frosting a brown color as a hamburger bun would look like, take a small amount of the chocolate frosting to use to tint your vanilla or cream cheese icing. Take one of the two cake rounds and place it on the bottom of whatever that you are going to be putting your cake on. Using a long sharp knife or a cake separator, cut the top of the cake off, and brush off any remaining cake crumbs that might have stuck to the outside layer of the cake. Now you are ready to frost the first layer of the hamburger cake, making sure to get the frosting as smooth as you possible can. Icing the top and the sides of the cake. After that you have finished frosting your hamburger cake, place the cake in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to let the frosting set.

Now you are ready to put the layer of the lettuce on your hamburger cake, using cake decorating cake tip #104. Take about 1/3 cup of the buttercream icing and tint it to look like a lettuce color of green. Cut the tip end off of a cake decorating bag and place the cake decorating tip #104 down into the cut part of the decorating bag. Fill the decorating bag with the tinted green buttercream icing. Pipe the lettuce on the outside rim of the first cake round that you frosted brown. Place the hamburger cake back into the refrigerator to let the buttercream icing set.

The next step of making your delicious hamburger cake is taking the chocolate round cake layer on a large plate and cut the top off of it. Make crumbs with chocolate cake you cut off of the top of the cake. Frost only the outside layer of the chocolate cake. Take the chocolate cake crumbs and pat them into the chocolate icing that is on the outside of the cake. Now, carefully place the chocolate layer of the cake on top of the lettuce layer of the cake. Then frost the top of the chocolate layer with the remaining chocolate frosting. Place the hamburger cake back into the refrigerator to let the icing set.

Now is the time that you want to start putting all of your favorite toppings on your hamburger birthday cake. Like cheese?, tint some of the buttercream icing orange. Like onions on that burger? Leave some of the buttercream icing white, or tint it a purple color, like a purple onion. Use your imagination when that you are decorating your hamburger cake. Use several cake decorating bags filled with tinted buttercream icing. Use cake decorating tip 5, 7 & 9 to put your favorite toppings on top of the chocolate layer of the cake.

After you have finished topping your hamburger cake with your favorite toppings, place it back into the refrigerator again to let the toppings set.

Finally you are ready to frost the top layer of the last cake round, using the cake round that you cooled top side up, with the brown frosting, to make it the color of a hamburger bun. Frost the sides and the top of the cake with the brown tinted frosting. Make sure to get the icing as smooth as you possibly can. Sprinkle the top of the cake with about two tablespoons of the rice krispies to make the cake look like it has sesame seeds on it.

*Note: If you desire to make a cheeseburger cake, you can either use the orange fondant or you can make you own cheese out of tinted orange frosting. To make the cheese out of the tinted orange buttercream icing, use cake decorating tip 5 or 7 and pipe out four small trainges, fitted to size of the middle cake layer. Pipe the tinted icing onto a piece of aluminum foil and place into the freezer until firm. Remove the icing cheese from the freezer and peel it off of the foil. Place onto cake and then proceed with the top round cake layer.

*Note: Getting your icing smooth. This is a proven method for getting the buttercream icing only as smooth as it can be. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and purchase yourself some of the smallest paint rollers that you can find. They make them real small. Then go to the grocery store to purchase some waxed paper or parchment paper. After that the buttercream icing has set in the refrigerator for awhile, take a piece of the wax paper or parchment paper, lay it over the icing on the cake, and take your roller and lightly roll back and forth, not wanting to press down hard on the icing. Remove the paper from the cake after you took the roller to it, and presto!, smooth as silk icing.
